Local Sports

There are seven or more local golf courses (depending on how far you think "local" is), including quite a few near Benning, and one on fort grounds.

Columbus has no major league teams, but there are quite a few minor league teams nearby, including the Columbus Life basketball team, Columbus Cottonmouths ice hockey team, and Columbus Lions indoor football.

Local college teams include the CSU Cougars with the usual slate of sports, plus co-ed rifle and a college spirit dance and cheer sport program; and the Auburn Tigers.

Major league teams in Georgia are all in Atlanta, including the Atlanta Hawks basketball team, Atlanta Falcons football team, and Atlanta Braves baseball team.

Hunting: The Georgia Department of Natural Resources issues licenses for deer, bear, turkey, feral hogs (with wide seasons and very light restrictions), alligator, bobcat, fox, grouse, opossum, quail, rabbit, raccoon, and squirrel. Coyotes, armadillos, groundhogs, beavers, starlings, pigeons, and English sparrows have no limit and no closed season. Trapping for mink, otter, fox, raccoon, opossum, muskrat, skunk, bobcat, and weasel from December 1 to Feb 28, with no closed season for trapping coyote and beaver. Check the Georgia Department of Natural Resources website for details.

Fishing in Georgia: The state has considerable natural and stocked rivers, creeks, and lakes, both natural and stocked, and fishing on the Georgia coast. Available fishing including bass, catfish, crappie, pickerel, shad, sunfish, trout, and walleye, in freshwater or saltwater.
